WP 33 -An Expository Essay: The Essence of Nationalism and The Significance of The English Language To The Country’s Development
The Filipino language is fundamental in the nationalistic visions of some Filipinos. Our language has developed and passed through many changes and obstructions to have the language we have today, which has been part of the Filipinos’ hearts, minds, and tongues. It is passed down by our ancestors and it expresses the uniqueness of our country. Because of that language became part of the ways to show nationalism, using it shows respect, and loyalty, and demonstrates mastery of the language use. Philippine language as a form of nationalism was imprinted in every Filipino, and when other Filipinos use the universal language, some recognize it as inferior, an act of disrespect, and signifies how Filipinos are losing their knowledge of our language. Despite the objections, the action to promote and pursue nationalism in the country is fading. More and more new concepts and trends influence Filipinos today and using the universal language to communicate effectively with other nations, strengthens the country's prominence. It is not the language Filipinos speak that shows a true sense of nationalism. The concept of nationalism is much more than language. The nationalism of a Filipino citizen is not only based on language, but it is based on efforts and what should be done, and how it is performed by the Filipinos.
Although we communicate
in English, we are not considered less Filipino. By adopting
the global language, we unconsciously enable ourselves to become more
productive citizens. Science, transportation, computing, diplomacy, and tourism
all make use of the English language. It is the language of
international communication in all media, and the internet. Understanding
the value of English, whether for personal or professional reasons, will help
you achieve the goals you want to accomplish. With English as your language,
you are more efficient in influencing and communicating in social relations.
Speaking the English language also
does not affect an individual’s sense of nationalism. People regard the English
language as an undesirable aspect in displaying nationalism because society and
culture have influenced citizens to believe that way. Filipinos are influenced
mainly by who they believe is right and Filipinos. Dr. Jose Rizal is an example
of an influence in the Philippines. His empowerment among his fellow citizens
values the greatness of the Philippine language. Rizal is the definition of
nationalism, and because of him, he has set standards in the Philippines that
made the use of the English language unsuitable for the country’s nationalism. In
the Philippine context, a famous phrase from his famous quote comes to mind:
"Ang di marunong magmahal sa sariling wika ay masahol pa sa amoy ng
malansang isda.”
Being nationalistic can also be
expressed in other ways, even if we use the English language, it will not defy
our sense of nationalism for the country. Showing how nationalistic a Filipino
can be, is exhibited in the actions that Filipinos accomplish. Actions lead to
movements and movements increase progress and development. If people are to
perform their nationalism for this country, they should not blame the languages
spoken by other Filipino citizens. The reason why our sense of nationalism is
not evident today is that it is rarely practiced, and it is rarely taught in
the country. Nationalism is not achieved if a Filipino citizen does not exert
his or her efforts, and simply speaking other forms of languages makes others
less nationalistic. Filipinos can show nationalism when respecting the flag of
the Philippines and Filipino culture. Be productive citizens that grasp
opportunities to help progress the country, be conscious of our country's
problems, and take pride in every Filipino's accomplishment. Also, we must
support our local products, and keep the Filipino culture alive, everyone
should be respected, and our traditions should be valued. Finally, recognize
and honor our heroes' contributions to our country, and respect our family, our
neighbors, and our countrymen. Our love and loyalty for the land can be
achieved by our efforts, not the ability to speak two languages.
Because of the English language, the
Philippines is recognized as one of the world's largest English-speaking
countries, with most of its citizens proficient in the language. Learning
English increases your likelihood of landing a decent job or completing an
international commercial transaction and Improves communication skills. The
languages present in the Philippines strengthen the country’s development.
Using the English language does not make Filipinos less nationalistic, it
creates new ways to show nationalism to the country, as it opens opportunities
that help support the country’s excellence. A person is less nationalistic when
he/she does not participate in any form of action for the country and does not
demonstrate the national identity and values of being a Filipino citizen.
